On friday......we (mokshya and I) were discussing a topic about “grooming leaders”.. I argued that if system is corrupt, every thing associated with that system will be corrupt. Thus we need to clean the system so that we can groom a new face to a good leader in a better system. Mokshya’s counter, “bad leaders create a bad system……….. One dead fish can ruin the entire pond……………same with netas…one bad neta that is all we need to destroy any clean system.”

Mokshya has a logic, I have to agree…no denial. But she never understood my concept of grooming leaders. Put any new face (cleanest of person) under the supervision of our great leader G.P Koirala…………. everybody knows the result ……… if he can’t be as evil as Mr. koirala he will have no future in Nepali congress. Bas system can groom only a bad leader.

This morning I checked the news from Nepal and found out that our king has finally decided to reinstitute the dissolved parliament…….. he is going to bring back same old school type leader to get failed one more time………. I doubt if Girija even has a vision of GDP, economical growth..and bla ..bla…………….why doubt I am 100 % sure he doesn’t……..not only him, 99 % of the Nepali leaders do not a vision. I will not blame them for this coz they were groomed in a system where only 3rd division student gets involved in politics……..a system where politics is believed to be a business………….a person with no skill what so ever in academics are joining politics………….a person with no prior knowledge of defense has been a made a defense minister………and when asked what has been his credibility ………. Answer will be “he has joined politics since 20...” ……..should that count as his credibility to be a defense minister……. That not their fault ……..truth is nobody better is available…………… take an example of tri-chandra college …….. some guy name Kishor Rathod was a FSU president….. his credibility “ gunda”…just wait few years………. He will be made a home minister of Nepal. Definitely not his fault………coz his leaders are pushing him rather than sweeping him out………..

After seeing people like rathod, rup nayaran….yogeshor bhattarai………. Hari acharya………..I am not too optimistic with new faces in politics……….

Let me go back to my topic…..GROOMING LEADERS

To be a police inspector, section-officer……..minimum education required in bachelor…….then how come there is not minimum education requirement for national leaders. Make it minimum of masters……….. and has to be a good student……… with some vision………..

When I was preparing for an entrance exam for Medical in TU maharajgunj……… 3000 people were fighting for 20 seats……….standard is very high for medical students….coz they are going to be a doctor ………..they are supposed to save people’s life………. Hmmmm……….interesting ……..only right person can be a doctor……..coz we are risking people life…………….come on with politics we are risking people’s future….why is it so easy to be a neta………….seriously , netas should have a good academic standing………and there should be more criteria, but can’t compromise with education ………I have already started sound unrealistic…………..because I know no policy maker likes my idea…….it will like “ afnai khutta ma bancharo hannu”………. But I wish we had a system of GROOMING LEADERS

100% agree. I have similar thought about the qualification. Every politician who take up the position at the cabinet must have at least masters. Makune, Oli, Girija should stay apart and give chance to those who have commanding English, and good knowledge about portfolio they are taking over.

But how? see the politician like Shankar Bhandari from TC. He was caught while sending other student to write a master's level exam for him at Patan Multiple Campus. Bihari certificate ko ta ke kura...

The names you provided with are really gunda. I know that there were so many good persons within Nepal Student Union, ANNFSU, etc but only these GUNDA like Rathod, Kumar Gurung, etc. won election every time. I don't see any different on Gagan Thapa at the time of election, though he possess political vision.

Finally, we should not forget the autocratic nature of Girija and Sushil koirala within NC and Makune et al in UML. Bicharo Gagan and other leaders were sacked when they were enjoying top positions at NSU simply because they opted for a republic Nepal. Similarly, just before the King sacked Deuba for the second time, Madhav Nepal labeled his party cardes, who opposed the then government led by Dueba and demanding the withdrawal of UML from government, "anushaashanhin, mandale, etc etc" and challanged them to leave the party.

People just want freedom from these autocrats whereever they are: at the king's throne or at the parties' thrones.

What I understand is the reinstatement of the Parliament is only a way out. Otherwise in absence of constitutional inrastructure made by the multy party in a peroid of last 12 years peaceful power transfer is impossible looking towards King's activities and his appointee throughout his autocratic rule. At the other hand, this is not just the victory of SPA and 205 MPs. The SPA will not forget to include true representative of this movement as one representative from Lawyers, Journalists, Civil society members, maoists etc who have supported the movement in the new cabinet they form.

Dead_burton, I had no idea that the Sun would rise so late at your place haha... Good Morning!
Reading your thread, I think we both were sailing on the same boat. When I said that we needed new people to join the government, I meant a completely new group of people.. As you said, one rotten fish can ruin the entire pond so I don't want any existing politicians to continue drooling over the kursis... I feel that all the old politicians should retire and sit at home. And a whole new set of people should come together to form the government... Also, there has to be certain criteria to qualify the new people for the government. So you can say that I was talking about the educated and qualified people who want to do something for the country and not those who enter politics only to find a means for their bread and butter.
I think I had misunderstood your point last time. All the while we were arguing about the system-people issue, I thought you were giving importance to the new system that would act as a check and balance for the existing system...Therefore I disagreed with that notion because I thought that there was no way the new system would get unadulterated by corruption and kinship of the existing leaders.. Such morons albeit few are enough to turn any rambaan system to rotten tomatoes in a matter of days... Now, I know your idea of grooming the system was almost like wiping out the present system and creating a more competitive and healthier one... If that's what you were saying then, I agree with you 100%...

you know funniest thing, when these leaders like girija speaks in english in any international functions , it just seem so shameful. It would have been better if he would have kept any interpreter like many top leaders from several coutries do. Even more humiliating is to listen these netas talk in hindi in indian television.

As far as good speaker in english goes infront of international community, king is head and shoulders above these netas. I read a report on saarc last time when king represented nepal, many believed probably it was the first time when somebody with such english speaking proficiency represented south asian country from an international newspaper. And it saved faced for many nepalese from ludicrous speeches of our netas.

"Even more humiliating is to listen these netas talk in hindi in indian television"
Being a Nepali, it has to be one of the most embarassing things... No wonder, why many Indians consider Nepal to be a part of India... Girija et al have no pride in their identity and have no self-respect whatsoever...

if the system does not work change the people

This saying goes to our parties as well.

Dead_B,

Yes, I was talking about the same Shankar Bhandari who is a lecturer at TC now. How come a politician can profess? You can imagine how many good candidate for the post of lecturer that Shankar Bhandari has been enjoying now were swept away.

Story goes...
After he was caught, he just served one or two nights at the police custody before getting released by Girija's direct order. Now, you can see how such lathait have been rewarded and how country's fate has been decided by such airheads. Don't know what will happen with these freedom fighters who are/were on the streets, who lost their lives or who are struggling with death now at the beds of hospitals.

i dont agree with dead burton.

first, you cant ask for a minimum degree level. because 1) education level is not necessarily correlated with ability 2) how are you going to replace the dolts in power right now? there has to be a systematic way for that to happen. even in the US, what fraction of politicians have advanced (e.g. masters) degrees? how can you expect that of nepal, which already has a much lower literacy rate. in democracy, representing the masses is more imortant than having degrees. how can an aloof phd holder who's led a life of privilege really understand the pain and needs of a remote villager?

secondly, you say only people with vision need to be put into positions of authority. how do you suppose we measure "vision." by the level of education? vision is something that does not materialize immediately. lee kwan yew's vision of a better singapore took a few decades to materialize. so even if you could measure *vision* you could never measure *vision potential*.

imo, medicine is a much more noble profession, requiring actual analytical ability to diagnose and prognose. it also requires one to take the hyppocratic oath to administer care. so this sense of *responsiblity* is built in. so i would say you are comparing apples to oranges.

however, i agree that a system for groomign leaders needs to be in place. it's either market forces that do that, or some sort of dictatorial policy enforced at hte highest level, like in sngapoer. market forces will never produce good quality leaders for at least a few more years, because that's not wehre the money is. the ones with ambition and potential go into ventures that are more lucrative in teh *short and medium* term.

so if the market forces are to select good leaders, we need to pay them well. paying a minister Rs 10, 000/mo is a big joke. in america, judges are paid a LOT so they stay uncorruptible. in nepal too, the minimum salary for people in positions of power should be increased. i would say a lakh or two may not be that much, if it prevents corruption on teh scale of crores. this goes for all offices where poeple can be tempted to engage in bribery and corruption.

girija and company are old. shere and the others, once they fulfil their current mandate, should go. i hope they go soon. i say 10 yrs or so will be enough to see fresh new faces.

another problem is that the more able nepali folks are out of the country. so if something happens and we begin to see a reversal (kind of like in india and china right now) of the brain drain, things will improve. we will see leaders with *vision* in business and politics. i am hopeful we'll see that day...laterzzzz

a response to zalim singh..........

"in democracy, representing the masses is more imortant than having degrees" , first up all ..........My topic was about grooming the leaders........ may take 10 years and we want to prepare them for future like they have prepared Hu jintao in china.........

why is any body illerate.............. ? answer is simple .....they are not priviledged.......... and I agree some body should represent their masses too........we have jai prakash yadav, bijay kumar ghachaydar, golche sarki, salim miya ansari........long list.......... on well..................did these guys remembered the pain that they suffered after getting a power...............there should be representive from all kind of masses for democracy to succeed.....but policy maker need to have a vision.......... and belive me or not education gives the best way to get vision........zalim you are right................. there are lots of stupid educated leaders...thus education should not be the only criteria........... but shoud be the minimum.............................every community ..........any ..........i bet they have atleast one educated able person to be a leader............at least one .........but we need to find him
