Dear Dad,

Thank you!

Thank you for paying 1/4th of your income for my elementary school fee when you had a wife and 3 more kids to feed, educate and shelter. I don’t know how you did it? I guess I was too young to know.

Thank you for buying us new clothes for Dashain and wearing that same polo shirt you had been wearing for a couple of years. I still remember how you looked that Dashain. I guess I was too busy to show the new dress to my friends and relatives that I never asked you if you liked to wear that faded shirt.

Thank you for bringing that used HERO bicycle that I had wished for my 11th birthday. I guess I was in such a hurry to ride on it, that I didn’t even bother to ask you how many hours of overtime you had to work to pay for it.

Thank you for not leaving me alone for a single moment for a whole week when I was admitted to the hospital to cure my typhoid. Did anyone ask you if you were ever tired/sleepless? I didn’t.

Thank you for not traveling to see your sick dad so that you could save up the expenses for that first TV we wanted in our living room. Did you get to see your dad in his final days? I guess not, you were too broke to even call him.

Thank you for smiling and hugging me when I said, “I hate you” for not buying me an 80 cc bajaj scooter when all of my friends were riding on Hero Honda Splendor. Were you really smiling? I guess not. Then tell me why did you go to your room and sob? I saw you dad.

Thank you for sending me off to Kathmandu University for my intermediate studies, when I could’ve joined Tribhuvan University with fewer expenses. Do you have enough funds on your pension account now? I guess I wouldn’t know unless you tell me dad.

Thank you for not letting us know about your everlasting back pain so that you didn’t have to go to the doctor. Does it still hurt? I guess so, because the only time I know you went to the hospital was when I was admitted for typhoid.

Thank you for those tears you shed when you found out I passed my intermediate exam in first division. Are you still proud of me? I guess all parents are proud of their kids.

Thank you for sending me abroad for my higher education even though I knew you couldn’t afford it. Did you pay off your debt yet? I guess not. You are retired and you don’t have any pension fund left for your so called golden (?) days.

Finally, thank you for thanking me for my achievement. Let me ask you dad, do you think it’s worth devoting your past, present and future for your kids? I guess I won’t know unless I have my own kid(s).

I guess Parents devote their lives on kids and maybe some of us can realize that and support them in their golden age before it's too  late.

Man! you made me emotional! These lines made my hair get straight!-

"Thank you for not letting us know about your everlasting back pain so that you didn’t have to go to the doctor. Does it still hurt? I guess so, because the only time I know you went to the hospital was when I was admitted for typhoid."

many of us realize this only after having kids, usually late!

you seem to have a pretty good grasp on expressing emotions.. keep it up.

Punte you brought tears in my eyes. My mom and dad are not that educated. They worked days and nights in my dad's traditional business to send children to school. My mom told us my dad worked sometimes 48 hours without sleep. Because of that my dad has a serious back problem .  Regular medicine doen't even work. Only chinese acupuncture does help him to reduce his pains. He has to do this acupuncture every after 3-4 months. My mom has to do in her forehead for her headache. I have a very sucessful brother but he doesn't care about  my dad and mom 'coz he thinks my dad hasn't done much for him because he got a scholarship in school in Nepal and scholarship in US school. But me as well as my other siblings are not able to help them much. My mom has a dream to come to US to see us once but I'm not able to sponsor her right now. Mom and dad I love you very much. I respect you very much what you have done for us  coming from such hard background and one day I will tour you guys in US. I'll promise I won't be like your son.

It really touches many hearts. It made me cry and made me recall the past.
There are more circumstances and difficulties behind the 'successful man' who hails from the village.
Thank you my dear dad.

It's awesome Punte Damai. It's so very true that we never realize what our parents have done for us until we become parents I guess. Even now when we call home we're so much in rush to say about ourselves that sometimes we even forget to ask if everything's okay at their end or not. Did we ever thank our parents for being parents, for showing us this wonderful world, perhaps not. Only when we've gotten what we wanted. Really touchy thank you letter, I'm thinking how many times have I said "thank you" to my parents. I'd be looking forward to going through your next posting. Thanks for sparing your invaluable time for Sajha's readers.

Very well written. I really felt for my dad and mom when I read this. I know whatever we do we can never  scarifice as much as they did. Can never reach that level. I am really attached to my parents. I want to do something really special for them, dont know where and how to start?. Really love them, there is nobody like family. I am sure we  will know about "parent's love for kids"  when we have our own kids.
