$75,000 bail for man accused of fatal DWI hit-run

NEW YORK (AP) _ A judge set bail Monday at $75,000, more than the prosecutor requested, for a college student accused of a drunken hit-and-run incident that killed a young woman who had moved to New York from Scotland.

Tenzing Bhutia, 21, who was arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court, is accused of mowing down Julia M. Thomson, 24, as she crossed a street near her Lower East Side apartment early Sunday.

A felony court complaint charges Bhutia with second-degree vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident involving a death, and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

Bhutia's blood alcohol level was 0.087 percent, a fraction over the 0.08 percent upper limit, according to the complaint.

The complaint said Bhutia told police that he knew that he hit something and did not stop.

A witness said that a black Mercedes side mirror was next to Thomson, an Edinburgh native, as she lay on the street bleeding.

About 3{ hours later, police found a damaged black Mercedes in Forest Hills, Queens. The auto, registered to Bhutia's father, was missing a passenger side mirror, had a smashed passenger side windshield and a dented front fender, the complaint said.

The defendant's father, Temdy Bhutia, told police his son had driven the car early Sunday, the complaint said.

Judge Tanya Kennedy set Bhutia's bail at $75,000 _ $25,000 more than Assistant District Attorney Dafna Yoran had asked for, and ordered Bhutia to surrender his passport.

Palermo said he expected his client, who entered no plea during the arraignment, to post bail.

Bhutia is a senior at Baruch College, where he is majoring in finance, and is an information technology employee at a New York City company, according to his lawyer, Edward Palermo.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 5.

Such a beautiful young lady's life cut short just because of someone else' judgement of drinking and driving. The deceased's family members have to live each passing day thinking about the irreparable loss for the rest of their lives.

About the accused making a zillion figure "revenue", (or is it rather "compensation") at a tender age of 21 even before graduating from college and driving his own Mercedez, I opine that his father should have recollected the son's driving record/history and/or drinking habit before lending out his adult luxury car.
This is pretty unusual for someone of my evil stature sounding so reformed here but I guess I have been losing my religion over this particular incident of fast and furious crash.

I think what we all can learn from this is that we need to stop all friends and family from driving when they are intoxicated. Life can be normal and wonderful, and one small incident due to a simple carelessness can cause the whole life to go topsy turvy. it is indeed a sad story... so young and such bright life ahead all gone crazy due to a simple mistake!! We might all shout at the "foolishness" by him but I have seen the best of us drive while intoxicated... and claim that nothing is going to happen. All you need is a small thing to happen and your whole life is ruined.

I hope the consequences are not so brutal for him and will surely pray for him.

Thats exactly what I've been trying to bring about here but fools such as Imi and the rest here have lost the sense of "compassion" within them (and in some other thread this Imi even posted about animal sacrifices as something we all should be doing everyday in some other thread...Do I even need to read their damn posts anymore??). These fools have been making this out to be a situation where the accused deliberately ran over the deceased...WTF?? Not that I have anything bad to say (since I knew the guy personally), but what he did was wrong and he should get punished to the full-extent. For both, it was a case where there was huge potential in both these kids and ultimately both have been left with no future (whereas in the lady's case it was more serious; something that can never be gotten back: life). I sympathize with the deceased and I feel sorry for the promise the boy had in him. Thats all!!
