i was under the impression, as it was not apparent from the BBC news, that they rectified the technical complications first and then sacrificed the goats to seek blessings or whatever. the 2nd Sep. news clearly states that they failed at the technical part and hence resorted to sacrificing proving that they are not just blind-follower of the culture , but they are plain stupid as well.

i am still not surprised that they sacrificed the poor animal...there are millions of people (intelligent/educated/smart or otherwise) who sacrifice animals in different temples/occasions to seek blessings or for other religious reasonings.

i for one had serious doubts about the technical strength of the aviation industry and this incident has only helped to increase the doubts and the feel of insecurity. back in the nineties, when airplanes from THAI airways and PIA crashed one after the other in a short span of 3 months, majority of mistakes were done by the ATCs (Air Traffic Controllers). With the geographical difficulties that the country's terrain offers, and the lack of adequate technical expertise, i am perplexed and to a great extent thankful to our fate (if that is what they call divine intervention), that not many air crashes have happened in the land of himalayas. probably that explains the rationale for the stupid sacrifice.

Just because some culture ate SHIT long time ago somewhere in their history doesn't mean we have to eat shit NOW, especially when we know it's just SHIT. We've a choice-be wise or be dumb.Animal sacrifice is out of fashion, it's a blunder mistake to the national image.The logo of the plain needs to be changed since it reflect only one sect of religion, also for the fact they will not repeat this sort of mistake (in the name of religion)again.

As far as i see, Loote is not defending the HINDU culture of sacrificing goats or any other animal. He is just surprised to see many NEPALI people being actually surprised when they most probably know that Animal sacrifice has always been a part and parcel of the HINDU culture.(again, not that the practice is right).

Loote bro: I am not an ATC but I was involved in these probes in some other capacity.
I agree to some extent that in THAI air crash, some ATC's are responsible. The report has already spoken about it. There was misunderstanding for position of a/c between PIC and ATC.
For the PIA crash, PIC did not follow what ATC instructed. This led to PIA crash but remind that these are surface explanations. I cannot reveal details for both cases. These informations are already public.

Please kindly allow me to add some lines here. I believe most of the people who posted are in US. If some or any of your co-workers mock about this news, why could not we say:

We still follow our old traditions. All of us (including those pilots know killing goat is not fixing anything, but they (including me here) "believe" if we "try" to do something to appease God (you can replace it with "higher power" or "uncertainty") the problem would not recurr. THE PROBLEM WOULD NOT RECURR --- that's what I belive that was for. And i am quite sure no amount of $$$$$$$$ and time spent with repair work would be able to guarantee that. So wht's wrong with believing in our tradition here.

BTW do not forget to remind your US colleagues that because of bush's rush to get into iraq w/o any exit strategy 1,000s of US citizens and 10,000's of iraqi people have been killed (which i think wouldl turn out to be in vain).

PS: The 1% analysis above: According to the WHO, there are approx 26 million Neps. There is no way on earth that 260,000 goats could be "sacrificed" in one year (not inculding the ones butchered and sold). There are only a handful of temples where sacrifices are conducted and it is downright unfeasible that each could do ten thousand + sacrifices every year. If you think I'm wrong, find out for yourselves how few templee there are in Nepal that conduct animal sacrifices...This practice is deader than the dodo. hahhahahah
