Within few days Nepal will see new Prime-Minister. Here is a new development:- King grants audience to US, Chinese, Indian envoys Kantipur Report KATHMANDU, April 16 - King Gyanendra on Sunday evening granted audience to three foreign diplomats at the Narayanhity Royal Palace. US Ambassador James F Moriarty, Chinese Ambassador Sun Heping and Indian Ambassador Shiva Shankar Mukherji were granted separate audience this evening, sources said. Though the details of the royal audience to the envoys of three influential countries were not immediately available, the meetings are viewed with significance at a time when the country is witnessing huge pro-democracy demonstrations. Meanwhile, Kathmandu was rife with two rumours today- one about a state of emergency being imposed in the country and the other about the king making a new address to the nation. Earlier today, the King granted a joint audience to the vice-chairmen of the Council of Ministers, Dr Tulsi Giri and Kirti Nidhi Bista this morning. Both Dr Giri and Bista reached the Royal Palace at around 11:45 a.m. and came out after about an hour. Soon after the royal audience, the two vice-chairmen called a Cabinet meeting, which continued till 5:00 p.m. In yet another development, Home Minister Kamal Thapa held a meeting of the chiefs of all the security limbs at his Singha Durbar office this afternoon. The army chief, the Inspectors Generals of Nepal Police and Armed Police Force and chief of the National Investigation Department were present in the meeting.

Although it is a good news that he is going to step down..a new prime minister means more disaster. Nepal doesnt need a New Prime minister in a old haggard face. But then, who knows what nepal needs? No one knows

>> But then, who knows what nepal needs? No one knows << i don't either but let me hazard a couple of guesses (for the short term): 1. we need a charismatic leader - definitely a new face, hopefully someone young 2. we need the army and police under civilian control - and whatever that implies, like maybe purging the top army brass and bringing in new faces there as well. then we can bargain from a position of strength - against both the king and the maobaadi

what if the king appoints a new PM, i mean handpicks him?? and runs the puppet show? king granting audeince to forign envoys is very very fishy. he would never stop down and relinquish power to the peoples on his own.

I don't think he is stepping down either. He is trying to evade further risks to his power or to say it accurately he will maintain the status quo at least. The same way any single leader can't be the prime minister just because Gyane picks him for the post unless the former wants to risk his neck from Maoists. Situation is a bit more complex. It's not the last year anymore. There must be consenus from all the parties including Maoists for the post of prime minister. The parties can't run away from the contituent assembly promise they made with Maoists on 12 points understanding. If things works, it will work out for the best. Otherwise, the country is heading for the worst. Soon, it might be not only state of emergency but also full milatary rule like in Burma. Nobody will dare to breathe openly. Gyane is a cold blooded murderer. He might have hidden under the hood so far but everything will come out slowly and surely. After all, he wants that latthak Paras to carry on his legacy. What can you expect from him? Think about it.

Amidst all these developments, I think that Gagan Thapa and the young force behind him are going to play a signigicant role to oust the king in spite of him trying to act democratic by let's say reviving the parliament at the moment. The republic movement is slowly holding a stronger grip due to the involvement of the civil society and considering that about 60% of the total population of Nepal is below 26 years of age, if the young guns start firing then this movement may take an irreversible form. Nobody knows the future but I am keeping a close eye on Gagan Thapa and the young blood of the country.

it appears that before feb 1, 05, the king knew that he would be dead in three years, that is why he asked for three years for self rule. makes sense?

Nothing will happen with this ruthless, emotion less and half hearted KG. Have not you seen his expressionless face while standing at the self arrangeed falicitations programmes. Every part of the country is burnig except inside of the Ring -Road of Kathmandu. Come on folks! come out of your home!! When the Newars come out to the street, Gyane is finished. SPA must concentrate not to fight with the AFP and RNA, but try to disobey prohibitions inside the ring road and show their presence at the nook and corner of the KTM city areas.

. This kind of people are on street today. . An opposition party supporter bares his chest to challenge policemen after a demonstration against King Gyanendra in Katmandu, Nepal, Sunday April 16, 2006. Nepalese police fired rubber bullets at hundreds of pro-democracy protesters on the outskirts of the capital Sunday, wounding at least six demonstrators. this mob mentality thing has alwasy fascinated me. you know, how ppl in a crowd get consumed by the mob psyce and go completely crazy. i mean, if these ppl sat down for a nice cup of their favorite beverage after a nice nap, would they in their right minds be able to rationalize their mob actions? this herd behavior is manifested in maoist mob butchery, pro-democracy slogan shouting, and the armed forces retaliation. but of course, without this kind of behavior we would not see significant change.
