My questions: a) Living on campus or off-campus-which one is better or cheap? b) Any Nepali friends at the same university? I need your contact or email to chat in Detail. This has been in preparation to join the institution August 2009. Regards, Borntoservenepal

First Congratulations for getting admission in Biomed science. The assistantship is 24000/yr. Also you will have a wide range of research opportunities. This department is the the best department in Buffalo. I live in Buffalo, NY. There will not be any problem for accommodation for few days before you find your own apartment. There are plenty of inexpensive houses near South campus(Biomedical Science dept.) Click on the link below to find apartments near south campus. In search criteria, select university heights. http://subboard.com/och/index.asp Also you will not need a car if you live in the university heights area. Biomed Dept is only 10 minutes away from there. Grocery stores, theater, pubs, restaurants, strip clubs are within the walking distance.

Simion- one of my cousin got admitted to EE dept there, but I don't think they have offered him any scholarship/TA/RA.. Is it gonna be a big deal to get those TA/RA positions after attending the school? He's smart enough guy... Right now I am not suggesting him to go to that school as he didn't get any offer. Any info from your experience/ observation will be appreciated.

Batuwa, I do not have much experience about what to do when you don't have TA or RAship. There are few graduate students who are studying without assistantship. As far as off campus employment is concerned, never ever think working off campus without permit. Even with the permit it is so hard to get a job in this area. You may find something on-campus though. So I would not suggest coming to this place without strong financial background. But it will be wise to ask those students, who have been in that situation, about how they generate their income. You can send an e-mail to ISSS about the nepalese students contact informaion. Another thing you can do is go to Facebook and type NEPAL or Kathmandu and do a SUNY BUFFALO search. You will find few graduate students. Above all, since this place sucks in the winter, try to be away from here. Otherwise something is always better than nothing.
