I was into an accident where it was other party's fault, I dont have my car anymore, but I dont have the other party's insurance information yet until the police report comes in which will take weeks. It happened becuase the other driver was arrested right after accident for DUI and no insurance exchange occured. Now, if I dont have car. So, if I rent a car from my friend, would that be covered by the insurance company later? or it has to be from rental companies like Enterprise, Hertz? Thank You

Your case is little different. Ideally, my approach would be to get his insurance info and call them and have them pay for everything. Since you said he was involved in dui he's already at fault. So what you could do us call your insurance company and tell them that you ere involved in an accident and you need a rental car. You could tell them that he was charged with duo to enforce that he was at-fault party. Again dealing deal with insurance companies is pain, I hope you have full coverage and a good insurance company. Don't rent it from your fren since its not reimbursable for the insurance company. Ideally I wouldn't involve my company on all of it, but in your situation its not viable.

Thank You Lalmon, You are very right, everytime it's not my fault, I try not to include my insurance company, but in this case I had to, and I was not able to get rental car from them since I did not have that kind of coverage. But the ajuster told me that if I could rent a car then the at fault's insurance comapny would reimburse me if I could provide them the receipt. So my question, is if I rent it from my friend can he write a recept and would that be a valid receipt eligible for reimbursement?

Do you know if the other party has insurance. If not you are SOL, let alone the car rental reimbursement.

Mr. D, Are we assuming that the fault driver has a valid insurance? I hope you are okay and hopefully he does have a valid insurance and you get cheque from them ASAP. In that case, they will pay for the rental plus the time you had to take off work due to the inconvenience of the accident. Working with the 3rd party insurance is such a pain, they don't want to talk about it until they get hold onto the police report, which might take weeks.

lalmon, looking at the type of vehicle he was driving, which would cost at least $40K, I am pretty sure he has a valid insurance. @Ruben, thank you, I do know that rental cars and all other pain and sufferings would be reimbursed, but they from my previous experience they asks receipts for that, I was wondering if I renting from a friend would be considered a valid rental.

I was in a similar situation couple of years back. I was hit by a semi when I was travelling from MD to MN and the accident occurred in IN. I got the report number from the officer the same night and called my insurance and gave them that information. The next day, the adjuster from that semi company came, met me and tried to spit words out of my mouth that in some way I was responsible too. So, think and choose your word wisely when you meet the adjuster from their company and a tip (you were not in cruise control if it was freeway). As for the question, you should have a valid receipt so renting your friend's car don't count as you will be paying taxes and stuff on the rental. I was refunded 3 days hotel in IN, food for those 3 days, rental for 3 weeks as I traveled back to MN and came back to pick up my car and gas during to and fro IN-MN. So, yes, you should be refunded for any expense that was due to this accident. If you need more info, you can pm me.
